Walk into any film forum and you will find one camp insisting a handheld meter is essential and another shooting perfect negatives with the meter in their SLR. The truth sits in between and depends entirely on what and how you shoot. This guide explains the types, weighs the free phone apps against dedicated units, and pins down the situations where a handheld meter genuinely pays for itself.

The types of handheld meter

  • Incident meters: the classic white-dome units. You hold the meter at the subject, dome pointed back at the camera, and it reads the light falling on the scene. Immune to subject tone, which makes exposure repeatable and accurate.
  • Reflected meters: read light bouncing off the subject, like your camera's built-in meter but in a separate device. Less common as standalone tools today.
  • Spot meters: reflected meters with a very narrow angle, often one degree. They let you meter a specific tone from a distance — the highlight on a mountain, the shadow under a brow — and are the backbone of the Zone System.

Phone apps versus dedicated meters

Modern light meter apps use your phone's camera and are genuinely useful. For reflected readings in ordinary light they are close enough to a dedicated meter that most photographers cannot tell the difference in the final print. When a handheld meter genuinely helps

  1. Studio and flash work: a flash meter reads the burst of strobe light, which your camera's meter cannot do at all. For controlled lighting this is close to essential.
  2. Slide film: transparency film has almost no latitude, so the precision of an incident reading protects your highlights and shadows in a way a fooled reflected meter cannot.
  3. Cameras with no meter: fully mechanical bodies, folders and many medium-format cameras have no meter, so a handheld is your only option beyond Sunny 16.

Taking an incident reading correctly

The incident method is only foolproof if you use it correctly. Stand at or near the subject, or in the same light as the subject, and point the white dome back toward the camera position — not toward the light source. The dome integrates the light arriving from the camera's side of the subject, which is what the film will record. In flat, even light one reading is enough. In directional light, some photographers take a reading with the dome toward the key light and another toward the shadow side, then split the difference to judge how the scene will fall.

Flash and multi-light metering

A flash meter is where handheld units become genuinely irreplaceable. Set the meter to the sync speed, trigger the flash, and it reads the aperture the burst demands — something no in-camera meter can measure through the lens on most film bodies. In a studio with several lights you can meter each one in turn to set precise lighting ratios, building the contrast of your portrait deliberately rather than guessing. Metering the Zone System way

Ansel Adams's Zone System is built on the spot meter. You read the darkest shadow in which you want detail and 'place' it on a low zone by closing down from the meter's middle-grey suggestion, then read the brightest highlight to see where it falls. The spread between them tells you the scene's contrast and how to develop the film to fit it. You do not need the full system to benefit — simply knowing that a spot meter lets you place a specific tone exactly where you want it is a powerful upgrade over averaging.
