On film, exposure is a decision you make once. There is no histogram to check and no second chance on a scene that has moved on. The good news is that metering is a learnable, repeatable skill, and once it clicks you will nail exposure far more often than you miss. This guide covers the tools, the modes and the habits that produce consistent negatives.

Reflected versus incident metering

Every meter reads light one of two ways. A reflected meter — the kind built into every camera — measures light bouncing off your subject and back to the lens. A incident meter, usually a handheld unit with a white dome, measures the light falling onto the subject. Reflected metering is convenient but easily fooled: point it at snow and it underexposes, point it at a black cat and it overexposes, because every reflected meter assumes the world averages to middle grey. Incident metering ignores subject tone entirely and simply asks how much light is present, which is why studio and portrait shooters swear by it.

Understanding metering modes

Most film SLRs offer one or more of these patterns:

  • Averaging / centre-weighted: reads most of the frame with emphasis on the middle. Predictable and easy to compensate for once you know its habits.
  • Spot: reads a tiny circle, often 1-5% of the frame. Precise but demands that you know what tone you are pointing at.
  • Matrix / evaluative: found on later bodies, it splits the frame into zones and guesses. Convenient, but harder to predict than centre-weighted.

Meter for the shadows on negative film

Colour and black-and-white negative film hold highlight detail extremely well but lose shadow detail fast when underexposed. The rule that follows is simple: expose for the shadows. Meter the darkest area where you still want texture and place it a stop or two below middle grey, and the rest of the scene falls into place. Slide film is the opposite — it protects shadows poorly and blows highlights, so you meter for the highlights instead.

A repeatable metering routine

  1. Decide your film's real speed. Many shooters rate ISO 400 negative film at 200 or 320 to guarantee shadow detail. Set your meter to that number.
  2. Choose what to meter. For a portrait, meter the subject's face, not the bright sky behind them.
  3. Read the important tone. Fill the frame or spot the key area, note the suggested settings.
  4. Compensate for tone. Metering off snow? Add one to two stops. Metering off a dark subject? Subtract.
  5. Set aperture and shutter, then recompose and shoot without letting a bright background pull the reading.

When no meter is available

The Sunny 16 rule is your backup: in bright sun, set the aperture to f/16 and the shutter to the reciprocal of your ISO. At ISO 400 that is f/16 at 1/500 (or 1/400). Open up one stop for hazy sun, two for overcast, three for open shade. Learning Sunny 16 means you are never helpless when a battery dies mid-roll.

Common metering mistakes

Including too much sky, which darkens everything below it. Trusting matrix metering blindly in tricky light. Forgetting that backlit subjects need one to two stops of extra exposure. And metering a bright window in an interior, which turns the whole room to silhouette. Awareness of these traps is half the battle.

The grey card and metering off your hand

A grey card is a piece of card manufactured to reflect exactly 18% of the light that hits it — the same middle grey your reflected meter is calibrated to expect. Place one in the same light as your subject, fill the frame with it, take the reading, and you have a neutral exposure uncorrupted by subject tone. It is the most reliable reflected-metering trick there is. No card handy? The palm of your hand is a decent substitute: it reflects roughly one stop more than middle grey for most skin, so meter off your open palm in the scene light and then add one stop of exposure. Commit that single correction to memory and you carry a meter everywhere you go.

Metering high-contrast scenes

The hardest scenes contain both bright highlights and deep shadows — a figure in a doorway, a street half in sun and half in shade. A single averaged reading compromises both. The negative-film approach is to meter the shadow you care about and let the highlights look after themselves, because the film holds them. If you have a spot meter, read both the brightest and darkest important areas, note the range in stops, and place your exposure so the shadows keep detail. When the range exceeds what the film can hold, choose which end matters and expose for it deliberately rather than hoping an average saves you.

Bracketing when it counts

When a shot is important and the light is genuinely ambiguous, bracket: take your best-guess exposure, then one frame a stop over and one a stop under. Film is cheap compared to a missed once-in-a-lifetime frame, and bracketing guarantees at least one usable negative while teaching you, once developed, exactly how your metering judgement compared to reality. Over a few rolls this feedback loop makes bracketing less and less necessary, because your first exposure gradually becomes the one that was right all along, and metering stops being a calculation and becomes an instinct you trust.
