Every light source has a colour, even when your eyes tell you otherwise. A tungsten bulb glows orange, midday sun leans neutral, and open shade turns faintly blue. Your brain quietly corrects for all of this, which is why a white shirt looks white indoors and out. A camera has no such automatic understanding, so it relies on white balance to decide what counts as neutral. Understanding white balance and colour temperature gives you control over the mood, accuracy, and emotional tone of every photograph.

The Kelvin scale

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin (K), a scale borrowed from physics. Counterintuitively, lower numbers describe warmer, more orange light, while higher numbers describe cooler, bluer light. A candle flame sits around 1800K, a tungsten household bulb near 3200K, midday daylight around 5500K, and overcast skies or open shade can reach 7000K or more. The scale describes the colour a theoretical object would glow if heated to that temperature, which is why the physics feels backwards compared with everyday talk of warm and cool.

Warm and cool light

Warm light, low on the Kelvin scale, feels cozy, intimate, and nostalgic. Think of golden hour, candlelight, and interior lamps. Cool light, high on the scale, feels crisp, clean, and sometimes clinical or melancholy. Think of overcast days, twilight, and shade. Neither is correct or incorrect; they carry different emotional weight, and skilled photographers choose or preserve colour temperature to match the feeling they want.

How white balance works

White balance is your camera's attempt to neutralise the colour of the light so that white objects render as white. When you set white balance to match the light, the camera adds the opposite colour to cancel the cast. Under warm tungsten light, it adds blue; under cool shade, it adds warmth. Auto white balance handles most situations well, but it can be fooled by scenes dominated by a single strong colour, or by mixed lighting where two sources have different temperatures.

The film parallel: tungsten versus daylight film

Film photographers faced colour temperature head-on because film cannot adjust automatically. Colour film was manufactured balanced for a specific light. Daylight film was balanced for around 5500K and rendered midday sun neutrally, but under tungsten bulbs it produced a heavy orange cast. Tungsten film was balanced for roughly 3200K studio lamps and rendered them neutrally, but shot in daylight it turned everything blue. Photographers either chose the right film for the light or corrected with coloured filters over the lens. This is the analogue ancestor of the white balance setting on your digital camera.

Correcting colour casts

A colour cast is an unwanted tint across the whole image, usually from a mismatch between the white balance and the actual light. To correct one, you have several tools:

  • Set white balance to match the light: choose the tungsten, daylight, shade, or cloudy preset that fits the scene.
  • Use a custom white balance: photograph a neutral grey or white card under the light and let the camera calculate the exact correction.
  • Shoot raw: raw files let you change white balance freely after capture with no loss of quality, which is the single best insurance against colour errors.
  • Correct in editing: use a colour picker on a known neutral area, or adjust temperature and tint sliders by eye.

Using colour temperature creatively

Accuracy is only one goal. Many memorable images deliberately embrace a colour cast for mood. Leaving golden hour warm rather than neutralising it preserves the romance of the light. Cooling a winter scene emphasises its stillness and chill. You can even mismatch white balance on purpose, warming a portrait for a nostalgic glow or cooling a cityscape for a cinematic edge. The key is intention: decide whether you are correcting colour for accuracy or shaping it for emotion, and set white balance accordingly.

Putting it into practice

Start by noticing the colour of light around you throughout the day. Watch how the same street looks amber at sunset and blue at dusk. Shoot raw so you keep the freedom to reinterpret colour later. Learn your camera's white balance presets and try a custom white balance in tricky mixed lighting. Once you treat colour temperature as a creative decision rather than an accident, your photographs gain a consistency and mood that separate deliberate work from snapshots.

The trap of mixed lighting

The hardest white balance situations are those where two or more light sources have different colour temperatures in the same frame. A common example is an interior lit by warm tungsten lamps while cool daylight spills through a window. A single white balance setting can only neutralise one of them, so whichever you correct, the other shifts toward its opposite. There is no perfect automatic fix. Experienced photographers either choose which light source should read as neutral and let the other go warm or cool for effect, gel one light to match the other, or wait for the balance of sources to shift. Recognising mixed lighting before you shoot is half the battle, because it lets you decide the compromise rather than discover it later.

Tint: the second axis of colour

Colour temperature runs along a blue-to-orange axis, but real light also varies along a second axis of green to magenta, which editors call tint. Fluorescent tubes and some LED panels push a greenish cast that no amount of Kelvin adjustment alone will fully remove, because the problem is not warmth or coolness but green contamination. When a corrected image still looks slightly sickly, reach for the tint control and nudge it toward magenta. Understanding that white balance has two dimensions, temperature and tint, explains why some casts resist correction until you address both, and it completes your control over accurate, intentional colour.
