Kentmere Pan 400 is Harman's budget fast black-and-white film, delivering dependable performance, moderate grain and wide latitude at a low price. It is a reliable everyday alternative to pricier 400 stocks.

Character & look

Kentmere Pan 400 offers a classic, versatile look with moderate grain, good sharpness and a forgiving latitude that suits changing light and everyday shooting. Made by Ilford's Harman, it is more consistent and better-behaved than most budget 400 films, and it pushes reasonably to 800 or 1600 for low-light situations. Tonality is neutral with a slightly punchy contrast that renders street and documentary scenes with pleasing bite. It lacks the tonal finesse and fine grain of HP5 or Delta 400, but at its price it is an outstanding value for practice, travel and high-volume work where every frame need not be precious.

Shooting & development tips

It pushes to 800-1600 with growing grain; develop in ID-11 or DD-X for smoother tones. A great low-cost stand-in for HP5 when shooting a lot.
