Rollei Infrared 400 is a panchromatic black-and-white film with extended sensitivity into the near-infrared up to around 820nm. Used with a deep red or infrared filter it produces the classic Wood effect, turning green foliage bright white and skies dramatically dark.
Character & look
Rollei Infrared 400 is a conventional-process black-and-white emulsion on a clear polyester base whose spectral response reaches into the near-infrared. Shot without a filter it behaves like a normal high-contrast panchromatic film at ISO 400, but its magic appears with a deep red (e.g. R25) or true infrared (720nm) filter, which dramatically darkens blue skies and renders chlorophyll-rich foliage in luminous white. Grain is surprisingly fine and sharpness is high, though the infrared effect requires heavy exposure compensation and often focus adjustment. Development is standard black-and-white chemistry, unlike the discontinued Kodak HIE. It is prized for surreal landscapes, architecture and fine-art work where the otherworldly tonal reversal of greens and skies creates striking, dreamlike images.

Shooting & development tips
Pair it with a 720nm infrared or deep red filter and rate around EI 12-25 to get the full white-foliage effect, using a tripod. Load and unload in subdued light and check your lens for an infrared focus mark.

Do I need a filter for the infrared effect?
